Antique Set of 8 English Georgian Hepplewhite Style Mahogany Dining Chairs
Antique Set of 8 English Georgian Hepplewhite Style Mahogany Dining Chairs (Circa 1850). Here is a fine quality antique set of 8 English mahogany Georgian Hepplewhite style dining chairs, constructed in the early Victorian period, circa 1850, in good condition. Number of chairs: 8. In the style of Hepplewhite period c. Reeded centre pierced back splat. Carved wheat central motif. Stuff over seat design. Taupe structured wool & cotton upholstery. Tapering reeded front legs on spade feet. True set (not matched together). The set consists of six side chairs and two armchairs. The chairs are constructed of solid mahogany and feature a moulded shield back design; incorporating a central carved wheat motif pediment above five finely executed pierced moulded shaped splats, flanked by moulded vertical rails. The stuff over seats have been newly upholstered in top quality hard wearing taupe structured wool and cotton upholstery, finished with cream coloured braid, with traditional webbing and hessian material to the underside. Therefore the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are firm but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The chairs are raised on tapering moulded legs, terminating on spade feet to the front, with sabre legs to the rear, united by a H stretcher for additional strength. The armchairs mirror the design of the singles, with the addition of two splayed reeded arms, secured by shaped vertical supports. The underside of the chairs retains their wooden slat corner supports; later chairs were constructed with solid corner blocks. Please note, this is a true set of chairs; they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs. The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design. George Hepplewhite (who lived between 1727 to 1786) is regarded as having been one of the “big three” English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale. The chairs feature a rich dark brown mahogany colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The chairs would look superb in the dining or boardroom. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture. These dining chairs are in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, frames and legs, but nothing significant considering the age of them. The seats have been newly upholstered; therefore the fabric is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The upholstery is therefore clean, free from wear and marks. If you do not like the colour/style of the upholstery, we can recover the seats in a fabric of your choice. The chairs retain the original polish; therefore they boast a fantastic patination and colour, which cannot be recreated if the chairs were re-polished. This is a true set from the day of their construction (they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs). The chairs are solid in joint; they do not wobble and they are ready to use. External height = 98.5cm or 38¾ or 3ft 2¾. External width = 57cm or 22½ or 1ft 10½. External depth = 55cm or 21 or 1ft 9.
